Pest Control - Wild Birds

How Can Wild Birds Be Considered Pests?

Most people consider wild birds to be amongst natures most beautiful creatures, but birds can also be carriers of diseases that cause respiratory ailments, viral infections, and food poisoning.

Wild birds also cause millions of dollars in property damage each year, by defacing buildings and structures with droppings, and nesting materials. As well as making these structures unsightly, the high urric acid content of bird droppings causes ongoing damage as it eats through metal, paint, fabric, and other structural materials.

Bird nests and droppings are also blamed for thousands of clogged drains every year, some of which actually cause roofs to collapse when rainwater cannot escape.

How Can Pestilent Wild Birds Be Controlled?

Some pest control companies try to solve wild bird problems with products like sticky gels that can actually  damage the buildings and hurt the birds. Some use poisons irresponsibly, and end up killing non-target birds and animals. These solutions are temporary at best, and environmentally irresponsible at worst. Knowledgeable pest control companies prefer to use an integrated approach to achieve long term environmentally friendly solutions.

Good Riddance, Inc. has been successfully solving bird and other pest problems in Western New York for over 18 years. A Custom Wild Bird Control Plan For Your Building

The key to a successful wild bird control program is to make desirable areas less attractive to pestilent birds, or better yet, make improvements & modifications to the areas so they are completely in-accessible to birds.

Birds seek easily accessible areas, that are protected from the elements to nest, loaf, or oversee feeding areas. The better a building provides these components, the more attracted pest birds will be to it. The following is a list of procedures that are usually followed in a full scale bird control plan:

  • Flock Dispersal: Before any cleaning and modifications can be made, it is usually necessary to first remove the birds from the site. This is accomplished by employing one of the following methods depending on the pest bird species; stress baiting, trapping, visual and sound scare devices, and (very rarely) shooting.
  • Cleaning & Disinfecting: To remove the possible health risks present at the site, it is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, removing nesting materials, eliminating unhealthy parasites, washing the site down, and sanitizing the area.
  • Bird Proofing: Depending on the site to be modified, many bird exclusion products are available to keep the birds out. In all cases, the products that we use are considered permanent and made from the highest quality, long lasting materials, like UV protected plastics, high grade stainless steel, and polyethylene netting. They are also considered non-lethal and non-injurious to birds, other animals, and humans.
